A landscape painter, Libby Mathews has painted in Tuscany, France, Mexico, Guatamala, Montana but her main love of the land is here in Rabun County, Georgia’s Southern Appalachian Mountains and Lakes. Her Red Canoe paintings have been an underlying theme in her work.

For Mathews, the canoes have deeply personal meaning.

In 1991 Libby, a Hambidge Fellow, became a full time resident of rabun County. She said, “I feel that living and painting in the mountains of Northeast Georgia with its incredible lakes, Streams, mountains and gorges has been the most important move of my life.”

Her beautiful soul shines through her smile and her brush strokes.
